Hi, I’m Tabi!
Shimonoseki is a port city beside the Kanmon Strait. Begin around Karato Market and nearby historic stops. Moji across the water belongs to Kitakyushu and is separate from this city guide.
This guide covers places within Shimonoseki, rather than places immediately beside your app check-in.

Three places to begin
Three places with different atmospheres. Start with the one that appeals to you instead of visiting them all.

A first-visit stop
Karato Market
唐戸市場
A seafood market visited by residents and travelers. Enjoy the building and strait from the waterfront; food sales vary by day and stall, so check the official calendar.
Getting there Check buses toward Karato from Shimonoseki station
A shrine honoring Emperor Antoku, who died in the Battle of Dan-no-ura. Its red buildings introduce the strait’s history; respect worshippers and photography rules.
Getting there Check buses from Shimonoseki station toward the shrine
A former consulate built in 1906, offering a glimpse of Karato’s overseas connections. Check current closures and visitor arrangements before entering.

Pufferfish, locally called fuku, is associated with Shimonoseki. Fugujiru at Karato is one soup example. Check ingredients, availability and the market calendar rather than expecting it at every visit.
Try Karato bus stop → the former consulate → Karato Market. Pause by the water and check food-sale dates; add Akama-jingu separately to suit weather and energy.
