Hi, I’m Tabi!

Takashima spans Lake Biwa’s western side in Shiga. Plan separate areas for shrines, old streets and Makino’s avenue, checking train and bus connections.

This guide covers places within Takashima, rather than places immediately beside your app check-in.

01 · EXPLORE

Three places to begin

Three places with different atmospheres. Start with the one that appeals to you instead of visiting them all.

A first-visit stop

Shirahige Shrine

白鬚神社

A shrine beside Lake Biwa. The photo shows its grounds in 2014, not the lake torii. View the torii from the grounds’ viewing platform and avoid crossing the busy road.

Getting there
Check nearby JR Kosei Line stations and onward transport

02

A first-visit stop

Metasequoia Avenue

メタセコイア並木

An avenue in Makino whose greenery, autumn colors and snow vary by season and weather. Keep clear of traffic and do not stop in the roadway for photographs.

Getting there
Check nearby JR Kosei Line stations and onward transport

03

A first-visit stop

Omizo Old Town

大溝の町並み

An area retaining old castle-town streets and waterways. Respect residents and keep to public paths; this is a separate area from Makino.

02 · A LITTLE BITE

What could you try?

Funazushi is a traditional preserved food made by salting Lake Biwa carp and fermenting it with rice. Takashima tonchan is seasoned chicken. Check ingredients and choose a portion suited to you.

03 · YOUR FIRST WALK

Keep your first walk simple

Choose the area around Shirahige Shrine or Metasequoia Avenue to start. Check connections and return transport rather than combining all areas in one walk.

Check the walking route

Check actual distances and travel times on the map. This suggested walk is separate from your app movement record.

Before you set off

  • Check current entry rules, opening information and return transport.
  • Choose an outing suited to steps, slopes and weather.
  • Respect worship spaces and photography rules; check food ingredients at the shop.
