Hi, I’m Tabi!

This is Ranzan in Saitama, distinct from Kyoto’s Arashiyama. Follow the earthen defenses of Sugiyama Castle and Sugaya Yakata to explore medieval castle sites through their surviving terrain.

This guide covers places within Ranzan, rather than places immediately beside your app check-in.

01 · EXPLORE

Two places to begin

Two different places: start with whichever interests you.

Grassy main bailey and signs at Sugiyama Castle01

A first-visit stop

Sugiyama Castle Site

杉山城跡

The photograph shows the main bailey’s grassy ground and signs. The tourism association describes a hill castle with multiple baileys and bent defensive lines. Take care on slopes and wet earth paths, and avoid climbing the remains.

Getting there
Check the current approach and return transport on the map.

Moat and earthworks at Sugaya Yakata02

A first-visit stop

Sugaya Yakata Site

菅谷館跡

The image shows a moat and earthen defenses. Although associated with Hatakeyama Shigetada’s residence, the official account distinguishes that tradition from the surviving castle layout of the Sengoku period.

Getting there
Check the current approach and return transport on the map.

02 · A LITTLE BITE

What could you try?

Ranzan kara-motsu yakisoba is a spicy local noodle dish featuring pork offal and thick noodles. Recipes and heat levels vary; check ingredients, including pork and wheat, and current availability with the restaurant.

Check actual distances and travel times on the map. This suggested walk is separate from your app movement record.

Before you set off

  • Check entry arrangements and return transport first.
  • Choose one stop to suit weather, slopes and local restrictions.
