Two places to begin

Two different places: start with whichever interests you.

A first-visit stop

Matsumae Castle Museum

松前城資料館

The present keep is a reinforced-concrete reconstruction completed in 1960 after the wooden tower burned in 1949. Explore the castle setting and museum without mistaking it for an original surviving keep. Check opening days and seasonal closures.

Getting there
Check the current approach and return transport on the map.

02

A first-visit stop

Ryuun-in Temple

龍雲院

This historic temple in Matsushiro has a main hall and living quarters dating from 1842. Check which areas welcome visitors and respect worshippers and temple guidance. A decorative panel is shown instead of a photograph.

What could you try?

Matsumaezuke combines shredded dried squid and kelp in a soy-based marinade. Some versions include herring roe; check each product’s ingredients and allergen information.
